Jelena Dokic’s forgettable 2012 season has continued, with the former world No.4 having to retire in the first set of her first round match at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston.

Playing against Kazakhstan’s Galina Voskoboeva, ranked 50th in the world, Dokic was trailing 3-4 before she called it quits, citing a right wrist injury.

It’s the second time in her past three events that Dokic has been forced to withdraw with the injury – she played just one game in her first round match at Indian Wells against Gisela Dulko before retiring.

On the green clay of the Daniel Island Tennis Centre at Charleston, Dokic had clearly been struggling against the Kazakh before pulling out, spraying three double faults and landing less than half of her first serves.

Down to world No.126 after beginning the year at No.66, the Australian has won just three of her past 12 singles matches.

Jelena Dokic has fallen on Tuesday at the Sony Ericsson Open in what was a disappointing day for Australia at the combined ATP/WTA event in Miami.

Following the defeat of compatriot Anastasia Rodionova in the final round of qualifying, Dokic fell in straight sets to Australian Open 2012 quarterfinalist Ekaterina Makarova.

It was a tough draw for the Australian, who had withdrawn early in her first round match at the Indian Wells tournament last fortnight. She improved as the match wore on but eventually went down 6-1 7-5 to the 41st-ranked Russian.

Dokic’s serve, which has troubled her throughout 2012, was again part of her undoing in her first round match against Makarova on the Grandstand court at Crandon Park.

The world No.119 dished up 11 double faults throughout the one hour, 20 minute contest, and won just 29 per cent of points behind her second delivery.

Makarova moves through to a second round clash against compatriot Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, seeded No.19 in Miami.

Broken in the opening game after winning just one point, Jelena Dokic pulled the pin in her first round match against Gisela Dulko at the ATP/WTA event in Indian Wells, citing a right wrist injury.

Dokic, who came into the event ranked a comparatively lowly No.118 after spending much of 2011 within the top 100, had the chance to get her season back on track after drawing fellow unseeded player Dulko, ranked even lower at No.126.

Instead, Dulko progresses to a second-round meeting with No.2 seed and three-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova.

It is not yet clear the extent of the injury or how long Dokic is expected to be sidelined.

Olivia Rogowska has defeated fellow Australian and defending champion Jelena Dokic in the second round of the WTA Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur.

Rogowska needed slightly over two hours to oust the seventh-seeded Dokic 3-6 6-4 7-6(2) at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort on Thursday.

“It was one of those frustrating days where I couldn’t play my best tennis,” Dokic said.

“It was a game I should have won easily.”

Indeed, Dokic did not play her best tennis – she only managed to land 45 per cent of her first serves and also threw in an unsightly 12 double faults.

With the round-of-16 loss, Dokic stands to lose 250 ranking points after failing to defend her title, meaning she will most likely fall out of the top 100 when the new WTA rankings are released on Monday.

A delighted Rogowska will now face Eleni Daniilidou, who upset another Australian in Jarmila Gajdosova 6-4, 6-0 for a place in the quarterfinals.

Australian duo Jelena Dokic and Olivia Rogowska moved into the second round of the Malaysian Open on Monday, both claiming straight sets victories.

Seventh-seed Dokic, the defending champion, defeated France’s Kristina Mladenovic 6-3 6-1, while Rogowska downed Elitsa Kostova of Bulgaria 6-4 6-0. The pair will now meet in the second round.

The win was especially encouraging for Dokic, as it broke a three-match losing streak and provided her with her first win in almost a month. Having lost in the second round of the Australian Open to Marion Bartoli, Dokic was then beaten in the first round at WTA events in Bogota and Monterrey.

Rogowska has entered the WTA event in Kuala Lumpur at a career-high ranking of No.127, having also reached the second round at the Australian Open before going on to win the Pro Tour event in Burnie and reach the final at the Sydney Pro Tour tournament.

Although they have never before met in a professionally-sanctioned match, Dokic and Rogowska most recently met at the Australian Open 2011 Wildcard Play-off final in December 2010, with Rogowska recovering from a set down and match points to record a 1-6 7-6(3) 6-3 win.
